It's late at night, which obviously means I'm making frequent trips to my refrigerator.  Truth be told, I am literally standing here with the refrigerator door open, typing this newsletter on my phone as I look for a healthy snack to satisfy my every craving.  Hmmm, what to eat?  I think I'll go with strawberries tonight (low calorie, high fiber, low glycemic, and quite filling), but for now, probably much like you, all this refrigerator talk has got me in the mood to TYPE SOME NEWS! Having said that, did you know that refrigeration can actually cause certain foods to spoil faster?  It's true.  In fact, here are 7 foods that you'll never find in my refrigerator (mostly because I store them somewhere else): 1. Bananas - Storing bananas in the refrigerator can actually disrupt the ripening process.  In fact, once refrigerated, a banana may never be able to resume the ripening process even if returned to room temperature.  Just think of how devastating that is
Apple cider vinegar Numerous peer-reviewed studies have looked at the blood sugar, carbohydrate, and insulin management effects of consuming apple cider vinegar before and/or after a meal. For example, one study showed a 19% decrease in blood sugar levels when consuming 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar after a high carbohydrate meal. Another study in which participants consumed 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar before bed resulted in their morning fasting blood sugar levels decreasing by 4%. But what are the actual results of apple cider (ACV) vinegar on fatloss?  Well, there has only been one study conducted looking at ACV and weightloss directly, that being a 175-participant study conducted in Japan.  In the study, 175 obese but otherwise healthy individuals consumed either ACV or water daily for 12 weeks.  At the end of the study period, the ACV group lost 1 - 2 pounds each while the water group lost no weight.  Unfortun

Soothe the pain and suffering of IBS with THIS miraculous garden secret By Glenn S. Rothfeld, M.D. In my garden, it grows like a bully—scrambling for every bit of space and pushing the other herbs out of the way each spring. In my food, it adds brightness and a Mediterranean flare. It settles my stomach… and it freshens both my cocktails  and  my breath. On top of all that, it also has a powerful effect on irritable bowel syndrome. If you’ve got IBS—which affects as much as 15 percent of the population—you’ve experienced the disabling spasms, abdominal pain, and either diarrhea or constipation (frequently both). And you know all too well that there’s no easy conventional remedy. But peppermint turns out to be an  unconventional  natural cure that provides miraculous relief for folks suffering from IBS, whose only other options are prescription drugs with a litany of side effects. Take back your quality of life Dozens of studies have been performed on peppermint

How to Make This the Healthy Holidays

Stick to the Program: How to Make This the Healthy Holidays Yes, it's that time of year again: the holiday season. And with it comes the annual battle many of us have to maintain our health, fitness and sanity. You've worked so hard the past 10 months; why throw it all away now? Unfortunately, that's what too many people do – eating right, working out, keeping stress low and optimizing their health and wellness from January to October, only to regress once November hits. But that's not your immediate future, because you've invested to much in yourself. And, as luck would have it, it's also that time of year when we offer great ideas to survive what we like to call the "unhealthy holidays." Take these tips to heart and stick to the program these holidays. After all, you're worth it. Less Is More: In general, the holiday season is all about excess; or at least the opportunity (read: temptation) of excess. That's particularly true when it

What are Orthotics? Foot orthoses (also known as "orthotics") are custom foot supports. They are designed to fit your feet more efficiently than over-the-counter (OTC) arch supports and balance the biomechanical inadequacies of your feet and legs. I feel most people should try OTC arch supports first. However, while they will match some peoples' arches, others may find the support too high or low, or too far back or forward. The most common reasons people use foot orthoses are for arch and heel pain (Plantar Fasciitis), lower leg tendonitis ( problem with the Achilles and posterior tibial tendon, and "shin splints") and for knee pain, such as chondromalacia patellae, iliotibial band syndrome and "runner's knee." Foot orthoses are made from casts or scans of the feet, and incorporate measurements of your foot and legs and limb length assessment, as well as your exact medical condition. Most patients benefit from a thermoplastic device, but t

Flexibility, Ease of Motion, and Regular Chiropractic Care In our day-to-day routine, most of us take flexibility and ease of motion for granted. All the biomechanical processes that result in fluidity of movement take place below the surface, so to speak, and we are not conscious of these physiological actions. We become aware of such mechanisms when they go awry and we experience abnormal or even painful mobility during regular activities. Regular chiropractic care helps restore our ability to seamlessly perform our activities of daily living by detecting and correcting sources of biomechanical disturbance, most of which are located in the spine. As a result, regular chiropractic care helps to reduce pain and assists us in regaining optimal mobility. In this way, regular chiropractic care helps restore our natural mechanical ability to move through our environment with ease and grace and helps us obtain greater levels of health and well-being.

Poetry in Motion

Poetry in Motion Picture by: By RABEHARIVONY Nomena Lalaina - Own work, CC BY-SA 4.0,  Many "Seinfeld" fans may fondly remember "The Chaperone," the episode in which the characters Elaine Benes and Mr. Justin Pitt meet for the first time. Elaine is interviewing at Doubleday, a publishing house in New York City. Her conversation with the managing editor turns to Jackie O and the ineffable quality of grace. Elaine says, "You know, grace is a tough one. I like to think I have a little grace." Mrs. Landis, the editor, dismisses Elaine's notion out-of-hand, emphatically stating, "You can't have a little grace. You either have grace or you don't." In the next scene, Mr. Pitt, formerly a great friend of Jackie O, tells Elaine, "You don't want too much grace or you won't be able to stand." Grace is a quality we instinctively recognize in many ballet dancers, medal-winning gymnasts, and professional athlete
