Fibromyalgia and the role of Chiropractic

Image
This white paper discusses the significance of the 2014 study published in the Journal of Rehabilitation Research and Practice called “Effects of poster anterior thoracic mobilization on heart rate variability and pain in woman with fibromyalgia”. The amount of fibromyalgia sufferers increases steadily each year. A disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues, fibromyalgia inhibits the ability to live a normal life. No cure currently exists for the disease, but many doctors and researchers spend time, money, and resources in search for the antidote. In 2014, a study evaluated changes that occurred in the health of fibromyalgia sufferers after receiving spinal adjustments. The findings were remarkable and as follows: ·        The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effects of one session of spinal adjusted care on both autonomic modulation and pain in women with fibromyal...

Seasonal Allergies? Chiropractic Proven to Help

Image
This white paper discusses the significance of the October of 2004 study published in the Internet Journal of Orthopedic Surgery called “Relationship Between Vertebral Deformities and Allergic Diseases.” Allergies are the 6th leading cause of chronic illness in the U.S. with an annual cost of more than $18 billion. 50 million people in the U.S. alone suffer from allergies. Immunity cannot be felt. People simply feel the effects of disease or sickness from weakened immunity. The fact that subluxations link directly to a weakened immune system can provide great conviction for Chiropractors to boldly and relentlessly communicate a much-needed message of hope in any community. This study, connecting the dots between spinal misalignment and the immune system, prove the necessity for Chiropractic beyond bad backs. The results of the research are as follows: ▪ Atopic dermatitis and bronchial asthma patients were divided into groups and studied to evaluate the relationship between all...

Autism and Chiropractic

Image
Doctor, This white paper discusses the significance of the study published in the 2013 Public Library of Science One Journal titled “Investigating the Autonomic Nervous System Response to Anxiety in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.” Recent statistics reveal that one out of every sixty-eight children suffer with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). ASD is defined as a complex developmental disorder that can cause problems with thinking, feeling, language and the ability to relate to others. It is a neurological disorder, which affects the function of the brain. Science and research behind the neurological influence of a chiropractic adjustment explains why and how children and adults with autism can be helped. This research looked at autonomic nervous system function in children with autism The objectives of this study were to:  ▪ Examine whether anxiety causes significant measurable changes in indicators of the autonomic nervous system in an autism spectrum disorder(ASD...

Chiropractic Reduces Depression, Anxiety, and Fatigue in Children

Image
This white paper discusses the significance of the study published in the 2017 Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine titled “The Quality of Life of Children Under Chiropractic Care Using PROMIS-25: Results from a Practice-Based Research Network.” Stress is at an all-time high, and it influences more ages in more serious ways than ever before. Studies show that children today experience more stress and anxiety than institutionalized psychiatric patients did in the 1950’s. And these kids eventually turn into drugged-up adults. Nearly one in every four women over the age of 50 take an anti-depressant while over 13% of the entire population take mind-altering anti-psychotic medications. Implementation of strategies and activities that do not come with huge risks and unnecessary harm should be the focus of the medical system. Chiropractic offers a unique perspective and individualized care that can help curb the severity and course of depression and anxiety. This research ...

Research Shows How Chiropractic Adjustments Promote Weight Loss

Image
This white paper discusses the significance of the 2012 study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism called “Baseline sympathetic nervous system activity predicts dietary weight loss in obese metabolic syndrome subjects” . Many factors contribute to why some people cannot lose weight while implementing similar strategies to those who easily shed pounds. One major factor evaluated in this study was the tone and drive of the nervous system. Researchers evaluated a group of obese subjects who put the exact same weight loss strategies in place to drop weight. The findings were quite remarkable. One of the key ingredients to those who lost weight is very specific and unique to chiropractors. This research shines light on testimonies shared by millions of people over eleven decades who have experienced a promotion of weight loss after routine adjustments. The findings are as follows: ➢ The sympathetic nervous system is widely distributed throughout the bo...

Chiropractic Produces Healthy Outcomes During Pregnancy & Labor

Image
This white paper discusses the significance of the 2012 study published in the Journal of American Osteopathic Association called “Osteopathic manipulative treatment in pregnant women”.  Few areas of healthcare deserve safer and more effective approaches than pregnancy, labor, and delivery. Bringing babies into the world in the safest and least invasive methods should be the norm. Unfortunately, current statistics reveal the most developed and advanced countries in the world experience some of the worst outcomes. The United States ranks at the very bottom for maternal and infant health compared to every other developed and industrialized nation. The facts and stats are startling, and something must be done. Chiropractic can play a part. If a pill could be created that garnered the benefits of chiropractic along with its safety and efficacy, more soon-to-be mothers would utilize chiropractic and more newborns would have a safer and healthier start to their life . This speci...

5 Risk Factors for Hip Arthritis

Image
The hip is one of the most vulnerable joints in the body to develop arthritis—particularly osteoarthritis. The lifetime risk for hip osteoarthritis is about 1 in 5 for men and 1 in 4 for women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). How do you know if you're one of the people at risk for hip osteoarthritis? There are several factors that can put you at higher risk. Being older During our lifetimes, our hips carry most of our weight each day, which can be very hard on the cartilage in the joints. Inevitably, joint cartilage degrades more and more as we age, with the potential to become full-blown osteoarthritis after age 45. Most people with hip osteoarthritis problems are in their 60s and 70s. Being overweight The more you weigh, the more pressure is on your joints—and the faster potential degeneration can occur. Unfortunately, joint pain can discourage people from being active, making the accumulation of more pounds likely .   If yo...

And all the while, you're trying to navigate health insurance, work and family life, and everyday stressors—all while dealing with your back pain. This blog is written to highlight a few fairly simple things you can do to help achieve some level of comfort and pain relief. 5 simple tips to help keep your spine as healthy as possible: 1. Let your spine really rest while sleeping. While you're lying down, all the structures in your spine that have worked hard all day finally have an opportunity to relax and be rejuvenated. To make the most of this time, you need a mattress and pillows that allow your spine to rest in a supported and comfortable way. Your choice of mattress and pillow is largely based on personal preference, your preferred sleep positions, and your specific back or neck problem. As long as you're choosing a ...

How effective is the treatment for migraines? Proof chiropractic works

Image
Seventy-two per cent of migraine sufferers in a clinical trial experienced either ‘substantial’ or ‘noticeable’ improvement after a period of chiropractic treatment, defying historical skepticism of chiropractics by some medical practitioners. The randomised clinical trial was undertaken by Dr Peter Tuchin, a chiropractor for the past 20 years, as part of his recently-completed PhD thesis at Macquarie University. “Around 22 per cent [of patients] had substantial reduction – which means that more than 60 percent of their symptoms reduced during the course of the treatment,” Tuchin says. “What makes this a really strong result is that this was a really chronic group – the average length of time they’d had migraines was 18 years. To get a change of that sort of magnitude in a really chronic group was quite amazing. “Another 50 per cent had quite noticeable improvement. They either found that the frequency of the migraines was less, the length of time they had them was less or tha...

August Newsletter

Summer is unfortunately nearly over, at the end of the month the children are back to school. For most people this means pencils, notebook paper and mountains of textbooks. But sending your child to start, or return to school requires some homework from the parents. Here at Bedford Chiropractic Clinic, I endeavour to be both your chiropractor and educator. So here are some tips for a healthy start Back-To-School: Backpacks: An over-stuffed, incorrectly packed or worn backpack can result in a serious injury and affect young developing spines. How heavy is heavy? Even a backpack weighing 15 percent of a student’s body weight is too heavy to maintain a standing posture. This will cause undue stress on their young spines and can cause vertebral subluxations leading to postural changes and even scoliosis. Many of the current bags children are using may be fashionable, but unless they allow for even distribution across the back, they can cause pain. School can be a challen...

Common Running Injuries: Knee Pain

Image
The knees experience pressure equal to approximately 3 times the body's weight when walking and approximately 5 times the body's weight when running. In other words, a person who weighs 150lbs puts about 750lbs of pressure on the knee when landing each running stride. Not surprisingly, the knee is the most frequently injured joint in runners and non-runners alike. Runner's knee: patellofemoral pain syndrome When people say they have "runner's knee," they are typically referring to patellofemoral pain syndrome. "Patella" means kneecap and "femur" means thighbone, so patellofemoral pain is pain that originates between the kneecap and thighbone. The pain is felt at the front of the knee, either under or around the edges of the kneecap. The root of patellofemoral pain can vary and may be difficult to identify. For example, the kneecap may not glide well along the groove in the femur (thighbone), or relatively weak hip muscles may ca...

Lower Back Pain, Are You Experiencing These Symptoms?

Image
Low back pain might begin as acute due to an injury, but can become chronic. Managing pain appropriately at an early stage can help limit symptoms in both time and severity.   Pain is typically divided into three categories: acute, chronic, and neuropathic.  Common Symptoms of Lower Back Problems Specifically identifying and describing symptoms can help lead to a more accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plan. Low back pain is typically characterized by a combination of the following symptoms: Dull, aching pain. Pain that remains within the low back (axial pain) is usually described as dull and aching rather than burning, stinging, or sharp. This kind of pain can be accompanied by mild or severe muscle spasms, limited mobility, and aches in the hips and pelvis. Pain that travels to the buttocks, legs, and feet. Sometimes low back pain includes a sharp, stinging, tingling or numb sensation that moves down the thighs and into the low legs and feet, ...

HOW CROOKED ARE US BRITS?

Image
Keep an eye on your spinal health News from the British Chiropractic Association (BCA) has revealed that over half the UK population is crooked. Don’t fret, we’re not accusing you of fiddling expenses or cooking any books, by crooked we mean out of alignment with poor posture and bad backs. The BCA say that in a survey of 5000 Brits the incidence of bad posture has risen to 56% of the UK population, up from 38%. Alarmed at the news we at  Men’s Health  sat up straight and phoned Tim Hutchful from The British Chiropractic Association, to find out how we can avoid joining the crooked crowd. Here’s his advice. Give your posture a sporting chance “Any unaccustomed exercise can put you at risk of back pain,” says Hutchful. You might only play a relaxed low-risk sport once a week but you still need to prepare yourself sufficiently – mentally and physically. “Warming up and warming down is essential to ensure that your joints and muscles don’t get a shock. Strong ab...

7 Tips to Alleviate Back Pain on Your Road Trips

Image
If you have back pain, riding in the car for an hour or more can be a real challenge. If you have a long trip coming up, consider the following advice and see if it helps you out. 1. Get comfortable immediately Take the time to make sure you're comfortable from the moment you set off on your trip. The smallest irritant in the beginning of your trip can turn into raging pain later. Don't have your wallet, cell phone, or anything else in your back pocket, as that may throw your spine out of alignment. Reduce reaching for the steering wheel, which places more stress on the lumbar spine, neck, shoulder, and wrists. Instead, sit as close to the steering wheel as possible without compromising your safety. Sit up straight with your knees slightly higher than your hips, and keep your chin pulled in so that your head sits straight on top of your spine. Make sure that your back is aligned against the back of your seat. For most people, this means adding extra support to th...
