Chiropractic Reduces Depression, Anxiety, and Fatigue in Children

This white paper discusses the significance of the study published in the 2017 Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine titled “The Quality of Life of Children Under Chiropractic Care Using PROMIS-25: Results from a Practice-Based Research Network.”

Stress is at an all-time high, and it influences more ages in more serious ways than ever before. Studies show that children today experience more stress and anxiety than institutionalized psychiatric patients did in the 1950’s. And these kids eventually turn into drugged-up adults. Nearly one in every four women over the age of 50 take an anti-depressant while over 13% of the entire population take mind-altering anti-psychotic medications. Implementation of strategies and activities that do not come with huge risks and unnecessary harm should be the focus of the medical system. Chiropractic offers a unique perspective and individualized care that can help curb the severity and course of depression and anxiety. This research shines a light on what chiropractic can do for problems seemingly unrelated to the spine.

➢ To characterize pediatric chiropractic and assess pediatric quality of life (QoL).
➢ The original data set consisted of 915 parent-child combinations.
➢ After data cleaning, a total of 881 parents (747 females, 134 males; mean age = 42.03 years) and 881 children (467 females and 414 males; mean age = 12.49 years) comprised this study population. ➢ The parents were highly educated and the chief reason for seeking chiropractic with their child was for wellness care.
➢ The mean number of days and patient visits from baseline to comparative quality of life measures 38.12 days and 2.74 (SD = 2.61) visits.
➢ After controlling for the effects of motivation for care, patient visits, duration of complaint, sex, and pain rating, significant differences were observed in the probability of experiencing problems (vs. no reported problems) across all quality of life domaines.
➢ Results demonstrated that children were less likely to report any symptoms of depression, anxiety, fatigue, and pain interference after a trial of chiropractic care.
➢ Authors concluded that the quality of life for children improved with chiropractic care.

The mechanism of influence of the chiropractic care on the children in this research population was not specifically detailed. But the evidence and results of the study point to the role of the cerebellum in the mental and physical health status of the subjects. The cerebellum is a part of the brain at the base of the skull responsible for posture, balance, coordination, and speech. The cerebellum also directs movement and can contribute to the emotions, limbic function, and the thought processes of a person. Any activity, intervention, or treatment in which influences the cerebellum will also influence many aspects of a person’s well-being and brain function. Chiropractic can help men, women, and children of all ages with stress-related conditions because of its influence on the cerebellum. In another study showing spinal health influences almost every aspect of organ health, mental health, and performance. As stress continues to play a significant role in healthcare for all ages and gender, the importance of chiropractic care at earlier ages for children and adults becomes vitally important.
